Dr. Jean El Achkar, Assistant Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the Australian College of Kuwait (ACK), has received the prestigious AUDI Environmental Foundation Award and has become an Ambassador for the AUDI Environmental Foundation and the One Young World community, becoming the first person from the Arab world and Middle East region to receive the AUDI award and title.
The Audi Environmental Foundation works to promote engagement and technologies for environmental protection with the objective of maintaining the natural resources required by humans and their environment, and One Young World is an annual summit that aims to bring together bright young talent from around the world to accelerate social impact and make a difference in society.
Dr. El Achkar was selected for the award and title from among 1100 competing candidates from 100 countries. He was chosen because of his innovative research on bioenergy and waste management and for his commitment to helping the community by furthering environmental sustainability. His research focuses on converting organic waste into renewable energy, and Dr. El Achkar has noted that he is currently initiating research projects on the topic at ACK and is working towards involving students in his work, and has already given a seminar related to the topic for ACK students and staff raising awareness regarding these issues.
Highlighting the importance of environmental research and for everyone to do their part for a better tomorrow, Dr. El Achkar said: “We are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change, and we may be the last generation that can act to stop it, so we need to think green and act fast.”
