Admissions Policy

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to establish clear, consistent principles and guidelines for the admissions process.

SCOPE

This policy applies to all Diploma and Degree applicants.

POLICY STATEMENT

  • The Australian College of Kuwait (ACK) has clear approved policies for admission in general and for each specific program of study. Application for admission is open to all eligible persons, who complete an Application Form, pay a non-refundable Application Fee and submit all required documents by the specified deadline. Applicants must meet the required minimum academic entry requirements as detailed in this document, including the completion of a pre-requisite level of studies as prescribed by the Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education. Admission to ACK is competitive and selective based on academic merit and availability of places.
  • Minimum Entry Requirements for Diploma Programs

    • ACK offers Business, Engineering and Aviation Diplomas across a range of majors.
    • As at time of preparation of this document, the School of Business offers the following Diploma programs:
      • Diploma of Management
      • Diploma of Marketing
      • Diploma of Human Resources Management
    • To be eligible for admission into one of the above Diplomas offered by the School of Business applicants must:
      • Submit a High School Certificate or its equivalent which meets the minimum requirements as specified in Section 6.1.8 of this document.
      • Possess adequate English Language Skills certified by one of the following:
        • TOEFL IBT Score 71 or higher;
        • Academic IELTS 5.5 (overall band score) or higher; or
        • Obtain direct entry level in the Oxford Online Placement Test administered by ACK.
    • Submit a copy of valid civil ID and a copy of valid Passport (including the residency page for non-Kuwaiti applicants).
    • Submit two passport photographs (4x6).
    • As at time of preparation of this document, the School of Engineering offers the following Diploma programs:
      • Diploma of Civil Engineering
      • Diploma of Petroleum Engineering
      • Diploma of Mechanical Engineering
      • Diploma of Electrical and Electronics Engineering
    • As at time of preparation of this document, Aviation Department offers the following Diploma programs:
      • Diploma of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Mechanical) B1.1.
      • Diploma of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Avionics) B2.
    • To be eligible for admission into one of the above Diploma programs offered by the School of Engineering or the Aviation Department the applicants must:
      • Submit a Science Section Secondary School Certificate which meets the minimum requirements as specified in Section 6.1.8 of this document and includes pass grade in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
      • Possess adequate English Language Skills certified by one of the following:
        • A valid TOEFL IBT Score 71 or higher;
        • A valid Academic IELTS 5.5 (overall band score) or higher; or
        • Direct entry level obtained in the Oxford Online Placement Test administered by ACK.
    • Submit a copy of a valid Civil ID and a copy of a valid Passport (including the residency page for non-Kuwait students).
    • ACK utilizes the Oxford Online Placement Test (a computerized test) to place applicants according to their appropriate English Language level.
    • Applicants who have the required TOEFL or IELTS scores do not need to take the Oxford Online Placement Test. The following table lists the minimum High School requirements for entry to the College for Diploma Programs.

    • High school systems that are not covered above will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and will require at least a passing grade as well as Kuwait Ministry of Education equivalency.
    • High school requirements for the students with disabilities are adjusted down by 10 % from the criteria included in the above table.

    English Language Admissions Requirements

    • All programs at ACK are delivered in English and the College utilizes the Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT®), to place applicants according to their appropriate English language level. The OOPT® is a computerized test.
    • The following table shows the OOPT placements scores and the IELTS and TOEFL equivalencies. Any OOPT applicant with a score below 35 will be provided a suggested pathway to the Intensive English Language Course (IELC) as delivered through Center for Continuing Education (CCE) at ACK.

    • Upon registration and full payment for the IELC training, the applicant is issued a conditional acceptance letter to join ACK subject to achieving an OOPT result of 35 or higher. The conditional acceptance letter (ACK.FO.AR.101.13) from ACK is signed by the Associate Dean – Admissions & Registration.
    • Validity period of OOPT®: An OOPT® result is valid only for a period of 6 months from the test date. After this time the OOPT® result cannot be used for admissions purposes and the applicant must re-sit the test.
    • Retaking the OOPT®: An applicant wishing to sit the OOPT® again may do so after a period of 30 calendar days from the initial test date.
    • IELTS/TOEFL Certificates: A valid IELTS/TOEFL Certificate may be submitted within the advertised Admissions period. ACK accepts an overall band score of 5.5 IELTS or 71 TOEFL score for Direct entry into the Diploma programs.

    Minimum Entry Requirements for Degree Programs

    • To be eligible to apply for a Business or Engineering Degree program applicants must have completed a corresponding Diploma program from ACK or from an institution that the College has a prior articulation agreement with and have obtained a graduating Grade Point Average of 2.00/4.00 or higher. Admissions to Degree Programs are not guaranteed and are subject to seat availability.
    • A Degree applicant can only apply for the major he/she completed in the Diploma program, with the exception of:
      • Human Resources Diploma graduates who are given a pathway into Bachelor of Business Management, and Aviation Diploma graduates who are given a pathway into the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical) or Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Electronics and Controls).

    False or misleading documentation

    • Submission of false or misleading documentation (including IELTS or TOEFL Certificates) is considered misconduct and is subject to actions in accordance with Student Code of Conduct Policy and Procedure (ACK.PLR.SA.01). This may include withdrawal of the offer of a place, cancellation of enrolment and, if applicable, revoking of any awards granted if the information used as the basis for admission cannot be verified.

    Transfer applicants to ACK Diploma programs

    • Transfer Applicants with a minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.00 from institutions accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education in the State of Kuwait who meet the above-mentioned minimum entry requirements are welcome to apply to ACK for admission to a Diploma Program.
    • The transfer applicant must submit a SEALED Official Transcript from the previous University or College. ACK reserves the right to revoke admission offered to any such students who failed to declare their previous studies in other universities and colleges at the time of application to ACK. Any granting of credits for studies completed prior to joining ACK will be determined subject to terms of Credit Transfer Policy (ACK.PL.AR.103).

    ACK Admission Committee and Admission Process

    • Admissions at ACK are determined by an Admissions Committee.
    • Admissions are competitive and subject to availability of places in the College. As the number of applications exceed the number places available, the Committee establishes selective admission criteria which exceeds/are in addition to the minimum eligibility requirements specified in this document.
    • Admissions Committee reviews and evaluates all applications and extends offers of admission to eligible applicants meeting the selection criteria.
    • Offer Letters are issued by the Admissions Committee in the name of the Associate Dean - Admissions & Registration.
    • Applicants offered admission are required to confirm their enrollment within three working days of the issuance of the Offer Letter by paying the non-refundable registration fee as specified. Failing this, places cannot be guaranteed.
    • Applicants contacted and offered a place at ACK who do not collect the Offer Letter within the specified three working days will be recorded in PowerCampus as Offer Expired. Such applicants will need to reapply in accordance with the admission requirements and timelines of that semester.
    • Applicants offered a place at ACK who reject the offer will be recorded in PowerCampus as Rejected by Applicant.
    • At the time of accepting an offer, ACK requires a commitment in writing from each student to adhere to all ACK’s policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

    Private University Council (PUC) Scholarship Applicants

    • Students who meet ACK’s minimum entry requirements and wish to enroll into a Diploma or a Degree program under the sponsorship of the Private Universities Council (PUC) are subject to all PUC rules and regulations in this regard.
    • Such students are offered a conditional admission to ACK subject to receipt of scholarship from the PUC. If a student’s application for scholarship is not approved by PUC, the conditional offer for admission to ACK is revoked. The student’s admission to ACK is not guaranteed and is subject to seat availability.

    Students with Disabilities

    • High school requirements for the students with disabilities are adjusted down by 10 % from the criteria specified in section 6.1.9 of this document.
    • Admission of students with disabilities is subject to the terms of the Students with Disabilities Policy and Procedure (ACK.PLR.SA.02).
    • It is the individual student’s responsibility to identify him or herself as student with disability during the application period and provide the required diagnostic documentation.
    • The College is able to provide accommodations for certain types of disabilities. Applicants requiring accommodation are referred to the Student Support Center for evaluation and determination of whether suitable accommodations can be offered.

    Readmission

    • A student who does not register for any Fall or Spring semester and does not defer his/her studies as per ACK’s Student Deferral Policy (ACK.PL.AR.205) must apply for readmission.
    • Readmission guidelines are outlined in the Readmission Policy (ACK.PL.AR.102).

    TERMS AND DEFINITIONS

    • OOPT refers to the Oxford Online Placement Test.
    • IELTS refers to the International English Language Testing System.
    • TOEFL refers to Test of English as a Foreign Language.
    • PUC refers to Private Universities Council.
    • Articulation Agreement refers to a legal agreement to provide a formalized pathway for student transfer between two or more academic institutions.
    • Transfer applicant refers to a student who has graduated from high school and attended another tertiary education institution accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education in the State of Kuwait before applying for admission to ACK.
