Emergency Procedure for Evacuation

PURPOSE

To identify the steps that ACK Instructors, staff and students should follow when the emergency alarm rings.

SCOPE

This procedure applies to all ACK Instructors, staff and students in case of emergency while on campus.

CONTROL OF PROCESS

Faculty and Students

  • Steps to follow when the emergency alarm rings during class:
    • Instructors shall instruct their students to remain calm and quiet; have them form a single line in preparation to exit the room.
    • Instructors shall instruct their student to do the following:
      • Do not collect any of your belongings.
      • Make sure all windows are closed.
      • The student at the head of the line to calmly and quietly walk towards the assembly area by utilizing the nearest fire escape/staircase.
      • Do not try to use the elevators/lifts during an evacuation. They are programmed to stop working when the Fire Alarm is activated in the building.
    • Instructors shall be the last person to leave the classroom; close the door behind.
    • The instructor shall walk calmly and quietly to the Assembly Area, and conduct a roll call to ensure that ALL students are present.
    • The instructor shall immediately notify the department head of any student who was present in class but did not make it to the assembly area.
    • All instructors and students should STAY AWAY from the building for safety reasons.
    • Instructors shall wait for the ‘All Clear’ command by Security before going back to class.

Steps to follow when the emergency alarm rings between class times:

  • By Instructors:
    • Remain calm and leave the building by using the nearest staircase.
    • Exit the building, using the nearest staircase.
    • Do not collect any of your belongings.
    • Do not try to use the elevators/lifts during an evacuation; they are programmed to stop working when the Fire Alarm is activated in the building.
    • If you encounter students on your way out, get their attention and escort them to the assembly area.
    • Walk calmly and quietly to the Assembly Area, report to your department head/warden.
    • Please STAY AWAY from the building for safety reasons.
    • Wait for the ‘All Clear’ command before going back into the building.
  • By Students:
    • Students should remain calm and leave the building by using the nearest staircase.
    • Do not collect any of your belongings.
    • Do not try to use the elevators/lifts during an evacuation; they are programmed to stop working when the Fire Alarm is activated in the building.
    • Walk calmly and quietly to the Assembly Point Area.
    • Please STAY AWAY from the building for safety reasons.
    • You may return to the building after the ‘All Clear’ command is given by staff members.

Steps to follow by staff when the emergency alarm rings

  • Staff shall calmly and quietly make their way to the nearest exit/fire escape/staircase and walk to the nearest designated Assembly Point.
  • Staff shall do the following:
    • Remain calm and leave the building by using the nearest staircase.
    • Do not collect any of your belongings.
    • Make sure all windows are closed.
    • Do not try to use the elevators/lifts during an evacuation. They are programmed to stop working when the Fire Alarm is activated in the building.
    • Staff should walk in lines calmly and quietly towards the assembly area by utilizing the nearest fire escape/staircase.
    • Staff are requested to STAY AWAY from the building for safety reasons.
    • Staff shall wait for the ‘All Clear’ command by Security before going back to class.
  • Emergency phones to contact Security Department for any incident are available in each floor.
  • Security supervisor shall conduct a roll call to ensure that all staff are present and immediately notify the Senior Manager - Security of any staff who did not make it to the assembly area.
  • Evacuation Drill Evaluation (ACK.FO.SEC.02.001) will be filled by the Security Department following each evacuation drill alarm.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS

  • Roll Call: The calling of the names of people from a list (roll) to determine the presence or absence of the listed people.
