Graduation Policy

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to establish clear, consistent principles and guidelines for the graduation process at ACK.

SCOPE

This policy applies to all registered students in programs offered by School of Engineering and School of Business.

POLICY STATEMENT

  • To be able to graduate from a chosen program of study, students must satisfy all requirements for graduation as specified by the College in this document and in all other relevant College policies and procedures. It is the students’ responsibility to fulfil all requirements for graduation accordingly and submit a Graduation Application by the specified and advertised deadlines. (Graduation Application (Diploma) (ACK.FO.AR.220.01) or Graduation Application (Degree) (ACK.FO.AR.220.02), as applicable)

Academic Requirements to graduate from a Diploma program:

  • Students enrolled in Diploma Programs prior to September 2014 (Students in cohorts prior to September 2014): In order to graduate from a Business or Engineering Diploma Program, a student must pass all units of study. In order to pass a unit, student must obtain at least a grade CYC in that unit.
  • Students enrolled in the Diploma Program from September 2014 onwards. (Students in September 2014 or later cohorts): In order to graduate from a Business or Engineering Diploma Program, a student must pass all units and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 (“C”) at the time of graduation. In order to pass a unit, the student must obtain at least a grade D.
  • Students enrolled in Diploma Programs need to complete their studies in the program in maximum eight academic semesters in accordance with the Academic Progression, Warning and Probation Policy (ACK.PL.VPAC.06). Deferred or withdrawn semesters or the semesters when a student is put on Disciplinary Suspension are counted against the maximum period of eight semesters.

Academic Requirements to graduate from a Degree program:

  • Students enrolled in Degree Programs prior to September 2014 (Students in cohorts prior to September 2014): In order to graduate from a Business or Engineering Degree Program, a student must pass all units of study. In order to pass a student must obtain at least a grade PP in that unit.
  • Students enrolled in Degree Programs from September 2014 onwards. (Students in September 2014 or later cohorts): In order to graduate from a Business or Engineering Diploma Program, a student must pass all units and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 (“C”) at the time of graduation. In order to pass a unit, the student must obtain at least a grade D.
  • Students enrolled in Degree Programs need to complete their studies in the program in maximum eight academic semesters in accordance with Academic Progression, Warning and Probation Policy (ACK.PL.VPAC.06). Application to Graduate

  • Diploma and Degree students must submit a Graduation Application attaching all required documents by the specified and advertised deadline. Graduation Application (Diploma) (ACK.FO.AR.220.01) and Graduation Application (Degree) (ACK.FO.AR.220.02).
  • Students who miss the above deadline cannot submit an application to graduate until the graduation application period for the next cohort. Consequently, missing the deadline will result in a delay to the processing and release of a student’s graduation certificates.
  • The submission of a Graduation Application for graduating Diploma students Graduation Application (Diploma) (ACK.FO.AR.220.01) is a pre-requisite for applying to a Degree Program in ACK.

Application to Defer Graduation to Improve GPA

  • Students enrolled in Diploma Programs prior to September 2014 (Students in cohorts prior to September 2014):
    • Students who commenced their studies in the Diploma program prior to September 2014 can apply to defer their graduation in order to improve their GPA, in accordance with the terms of the ACK Grading Policy for Cohorts before September 2014 (ACK.PL.VPAC.02).
    • Students wanting to defer their graduation must submit a Deferral of Graduation Form (ACK.FO.AR.220.03), accompanied by an Advising Sheet, within one week after the grades are released. Forms submitted without a complete Advising Sheet signed by the relevant Academic Advisors, the Heads of Departments and the Deans of relevant Schools will not be processed.
  • Students enrolled in Diploma and Degree Programs from September 2014 onwards. (Students in September 2014 or later cohorts):
    • Diploma and Degree students who commenced their studies in September 2014 and onwards can apply to defer their graduation in order to improve their GPA, in accordance with ACK Grading Policy for September 2014 Cohorts and onwards (ACK.PL.VPAC.05)
    • Students wanting to defer their graduation must submit a Deferral of Graduation Form (ACK.FO.AR.220.03), accompanied by an Advising Sheet, within one week after the grades are released. Forms submitted without a completed Advising Sheet signed by the relevant Academic Advisors, the Heads of Departments and the Deans of relevant Schools will not be processed.

Students Suspended or Expelled from the College

  • Any violation by a student which grants suspension under the Student Code of Conduct Policy and Procedure (ACK.PLR.SA.01) or the Code of Academic Integrity (ACK.PLR.VPAC.09) that takes place after the completion of the work for the semester (after the final examinations) may delay the student’s graduation.
  • Any violation by a student which grants an expulsion under the Student Code of Conduct Policy and Procedure (ACK.PLR.SA.01) or the Code of Academic Integrity (ACK.PLR.VPAC.09), whether the violation takes place during the semester or after the completion of the work for the semester (after the final examinations) will result in the student not being able to graduate.

Release of Graduation Documents

  • A completed Graduation Release Form (Appendix I), to be obtained from the Library, clearing students of all responsibilities towards ACK, is required from all students prior to the issuance of any graduation documents. Graduation documents will not be released to students who fail to provide this form within specified and advertised deadlines.

  • A Graduation Pack including the documents listed below is provided to students at the time of graduation:

Annual ACK Graduation Ceremony

  • Only students who have been approved to graduate by ACK and whose certificates have been endorsed by PUC and where applicable who have received their certificate from the International Partner are included in the Annual ACK Graduation Ceremony.
  • The Graduation ceremony is held once a year during the Fall Semester.
  • The students who graduate during summer semester will attend the graduation ceremony during the following year.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS

  • Academic Semester (Semester): An academic semester is a Fall or Spring semester. Summer semester is optional and is not considered an academic semester.
  • Census Date: The last day to withdraw without a grade penalty as defined by ACK Academic Calendar. Should this day fall on a Friday, Saturday or a public holiday, the Census Date will be the next working day.
  • International Partner: An International Partner is an institution that has a partnership agreement with ACK.
  • Graduate: Any student who has successfully completed their program of study, and fulfilled graduation requirements specified in this document, and received a graduation certificate.
  • PUC: Private Universities Council. “The Government body in Kuwait that supervises and regulates private colleges and universities”.
  • Program of study: Refers to a Diploma or a Degree program.
  • Cumulative GPA: Weighted mean value of all grade points a student earned on units attempted at any point in time. A student’s cumulative GPA is calculated separately for Diploma and Degree programs and includes grade points earned during a summer term if the student has taken studies in ACK during summer.
